J.C. Penney Co. Inc. (NYSE: JCP) is geared up for a partnership with Fanatics Inc., which will now have physical shops inside J.C. Penney store locations.
Since 2014, sports e-commerce leader Fanatics has operated retail shops online at jcpenney.com. But, according to a June 7 press release, 325 JCPenney stores will now house Fanatics shops with local collegiate and professional sports team merchandise.
“We’re delighted to combine their best-in-class assortment with a dynamic in-store experience that offers sports fans a one-stop destination for all their local team apparel needs,” said James Starke, J.C. Penney’s senior vice president and head of merchandising, in the press release.
Sports fans will now have the option to see, feel and try out apparel and merchandise made by prominent brands for their favorite sports team from any major sports league.
Fanatics has nearly 300,000 licensed products at its disposal.
There are plans to open approximately 325 more Fanatics shops in time for back-to-school shopping.
The shops are roughly 650 square feet in size, while 50 “premium” shops will be as big as 1,300 square feet.
“Combining a stunning specialty store environment with the unparalleled power of our online Sports Fan Shop provides J.C. Penney a unique competitive advantage, driving spend and frequency of visits to both stores and jcpenney.com,” Starke said.
