Bangladesh Cabinet gives final nod to EPZ labour law

Giving a further boost to labour welfare issues while also cutting down on percentage of workers’ consent to form welfare association, Bangladesh’s Cabinet recently gave the final go ahead to amendments to the Bangladesh EPZ Labour Act, as per reports.

The Government’s move is expected to further relax the labour law for the export processing zones (EPZ) to ensure better rights for workers employed in factories housed inside the special industrial parks.

As per media reports, Cabinet Secretary Md Shafiul Alam informed pressmen that the draft law got the final nod without any change at the recently held cabinet meeting.

This incidentally has been one of the major demands of international communities like the International Labour Organisation (ILO), European Union (EU), USA and Canada.

The amendment will further reportedly allow officials of the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE) to inspect the factories inside the EPZs apart from the officials of Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (Bepza).
