The 43rd meeting of the Core Committee on Crisis Management for the garment sector was held recently during which, it was decided to take all necessary measures to ensure that salaries and allowances of all workers are paid before the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.
At the same time, it was also decided that the concerned ministry will constitute a joint monitoring cell with the Department of Inspection of Factories and Establishments (DIFE) and Department of Labour to monitor the ongoing situation in the industrial area.
“We held the meeting mainly to urge the factory owners so that they pay the workers timely before the Eid festival,” State Minister for Labour and Employment Begum Monnujan Sufian reportedly said, adding the ministry would hold more meetings soon with factory owners, Government high-ups, the industrial police and the leaders of trade bodies in the garment sector to set the deadline for paying the workers before Eid-ul-Azha.
After the meeting, Acting Secretary of Labour and Employment Ministry KM Ali Azam said the owners of garment and industrial companies, including BGMEA, BKMEA and BTMA leaders have agreed in the meeting the workers’ pay, bonuses and arrears (those who have) will be paid before the Eid holidays.
The Director General of the Industrial Police has been instructed to keep a watch on the law and order situation in the industrial areas, he added.
Chaired by State Minister for Labour and Employment Munnujan Sufian, the meeting was also attended by BGMEA Director Munsur Khaled, BTMA Director Jamal Uddin, Director General of Industrial Police Abdus Salam and Jatiya Sramik League President Shukur Mahmud.
