Gas shortage hits Pakistan’s garment export production

Textile firms across Karachi are facing severe shortage of gas supply. This was announced by Jawed Bilwani, Chairman, Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PHMA).

The Chairman further added that most of these textile firms have been forced to work for six days in a week owing to weekly one-day industrial gas holiday by the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC).

Reportedly, competing industries in the region remain operational round the year.

Bilwani said that the export production was severly hit for 14 days in December, when the industries remained without gas supply for 4 to 13 hours.

He also said that generators too failed due to low gas pressure and machines got damaged because of power fluctuation.

PHMA has been constantly urging the Government of Pakistan to ask SSGC to immediately supply gas to the textile units.
