The Calzedonia Group, fashion and apparel maker from Italy, opened its first garment unit, ITACA Textile Plc., in Ethiopia on 19 October 2018.

The factory, located in the Tigray region, saw participation from senior government officials, including State Minister of Trade and Industry, Mebrahtu Meles.

The US $ 15 million factory will provide jobs to nearly 1,300 people. It is worth noting that the company is already exporting apparels worth 22 million Ethiopian Birr every month to European nations.

This was confirmed by Federico Fraboni, CEO, ITACA, on the day of inauguration. The factory has already grabbed the eyeballs due to its closeness to Eritrea’s Massawa port.

“Two more textile units will be operational soon,” averred Haftom Fantahunegn, Investment Director, Tigray Trade, Industry and Urban Development Bureau.

The factory is housed in the Mekelle Industrial Park that was inaugurated last year at an investment of US $ 100 million.
