Uganda’s fashion industry to benefit at Uganda Festival in USA

Ahead of this year’s Uganda Festival under the Ugandans in North American Association (UNAA) Causes to be held August 30 to September 3 at Gaylord National Resort and Convention Centre in Washington D.C, it will be the Ugandan fashion industry that will benefit from the festival.

There will be several performances from local artistes Afrigo Band, Chris Evans and Fille Mutoni, alongside Nigerian artiste, Rudeboy (formerly of P-Square) at the festival dubbed “The Summer’s Ultimate Weekend” but for a fashion industry that has been beset by a myriad of challenges over the years, such a platform before global eyes, and in US with the biggest fashion industry, helps draw attention onto home stuff and enables our Fashionistas pick some ideas from the best.

The top Ugandan designers set to exhibit at the festival’s Fashion Weekend will include Santa Azo, Anita Beryl and Fatumah Asha.

The aim, according to the organisers, is to inspire and promote Uganda’s fashion industry to a wider global market.

UNAA Causes chief executive officer David Muwanga said, “Fashion Weekend’s purpose is to inspire and promote the African fashion industry around the world.”

Muwanga continued: “We have done this by bringing top African designers, models and fashion enthusiasts to exhibit and showcase their products. The exhibition is part of UNAA Causes Business Expo program that also caters to all other businesses.

He added: “We need to revise Ugandan fashion industry a little for the Ugandan audience. It is high time our designers became exporters. Already some of them like Santa Azo and Fatumah Asha export to the States.”

The festival runway will be hosted by local TV presenter Sheilah Gashumba, which will be part of the grand finale dinner gala hosted by Sanyu Fm’s Crystal Newman.

The other activities set to take place as a way of celebrating Ugandan heritage with the free world and exchanging ideas at the four-day festival will include Diaspora Entrepreneurship and Business Expo, a Taste of Uganda, a cultural extravaganza, a dinner board cruise aboard the Odyssey Cruise and a tour of iconic American monuments and museums in Washington D.C.
